As Faculty Director of Academic Programs at the GW Alliance for a Sustainable Future, Margaret Gonglewski (PhD, Georgetown University) leads efforts to expand sustainability education across the university, building connections among disciplines and preparing students for careers in a world where sustainability is central. Her scholarship and curriculum design emphasize integrating sustainability into language and culture learning, as in her publications on teaching sustainability in advanced German classes and her seminar Green Germany: Sustainability Meister or Myth?. Collaboration with colleagues is a hallmark of her work: with Anna Helm (International Business) she has co-authored green business cases and articles, and with Nina Kelsey (Public Policy) she received a Sustainability Research Institute grant to study climate activism in Germany and the U.S. Her commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship is demonstrated through her leadership as editor of the Global Business Languages journal, and her service as chair of the Language for Specific Purposes Special Interest Group of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. In addition to her role at ASF, she directs GW’s German Language Program and serves as Faculty Coordinator of Business Language Programs at the Center for International Business Education and Research, mentoring faculty through initiatives such as the Business Language Case Fellowship program and linking language learning with international business and sustainability. Her work with students has been recognized with the Bender Teaching Award and the CCAS Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising.
