Join the New Sustainability Living-Learning Community

Located on GW’s Mount Vernon Campus, the Sustainability Living-Learning Community (LLC) offers a year-long residential experience for first-year students passionate about the planet and its future. Students live, learn, and collaborate with peers while engaging in sustainability-focused events, service projects, and exploration across campus and Washington, D.C.

In addition to the residential experience, students take UW 1020: Imagining a Sustainable Future in their fall semester, a writing course centered on sustainability. In the spring, students enroll in SUST 1001: Introduction to Sustainability, which explores the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and fulfills GW’s general education requirement for civic engagement. From climate justice to clean energy, students build lasting connections while exploring real-world solutions in an interdisciplinary community.

Learning Objectives

Students in the Sustainability LLC:

  • Get excited about sustainability and build community with sustainability-interested students and faculty
  • Identify and discuss critical sustainability challenges facing the world and the actions that they and others can take to manage, mitigate, adapt, and thrive
  • Recognize and reflect on how they can contribute to sustainable change, projects, and research on campus, in the Washington, D.C., community, and globally
  • Prepare to navigate internships, service, and work opportunities in sustainability-oriented fields and incorporate sustainability values into their chosen career paths

Create a model community that prioritizes sustainability as a lens for learning, living, and action.
